Community Based Environmental Protection
GMI's Community program is based upon several elements outlined
in the Earth Charter. For more about
the Earth Charter, click here.
Places within community-level
environmental decisions where GMI’s involvement may
be focused:
Land
use (including
agriculture, watershed protection, smartgrowth, municipal
solid waste, etc.)
Air quality (community
level impacts of hybrid cars and NEVs, indoor air
quality)
Water quality (public
involvement in TMDL development, and coordination
with watershed management planning)
Community
economic development issues where they
intersect with the topics above.
Additional benefits of GMI involvement with community-level
projects:
GMI’s past experience and contacts at the state and
federal levels provide the ability to move information from
community projects to the national level and vice versa.
GMI’s experience working around the country helps to
provide perspective from outside the region or community, as
well as innovative ideas borrowed from other projects.
GMI is a mission-driven organization, rather than a consultant
or interest group. As such, GMI is a neutral partner, focusing
on how a decision is made (with consideration, access to information,
and inclusiveness), rather than what decision is made.
Recent community projects have included:
Randolph Area Family Farms
Central VT Solid Waste Management District
